Het nieuwe gebouw aan Heidelberglaan 15 is alweer bijna drie maanden in gebruik. Tijd voor een evaluatiemomentje onder medewerkers en studenten. Hoe bevalt de nieuwe locatie tot nu toe? Wat is top en wat kan nog beter?
Docent ICT Gert van Hardeveld is naar eigen zeggen best trots op het nieuwe gebouw en nodigt met plezier mensen van buiten uit. “Al bij binnenkomst voelt het gebouw goed aan. Staand en gastvrij opgewacht door de host of hostess bij de deur. De koffiecorner, eettentjes en zitjes rondom geven een gezellige uitstraling. De dynamiek als je binnenkomt, vind ik mooi. Kijk om je heen en je ziet overal mensen bewegen, met de roltrappen omhoog gaan, en werken in kleine en grote groepen. Het gebouw is op heel veel manieren ingedeeld en voor iedereen is er wel een plek om te werken.”
Van Hardeveld merkt daarnaast dat de samenwerking met bijvoorbeeld de opleiding Communication and Multimedia Design makkelijker is nu ze samen in één gebouw zitten. “En als onze studenten moeten pitchen kan ik de tribune van de tv-studio gebruiken. Kortom voor iedere situatie is een goede invulling van ruimte mogelijk. En ja die bar (science café HideOut red.) is ook wel verleidelijk om af en toe met studenten en collega’s stoom af te blazen.” Het enige minpunt is volgens hem dat er te veel standaard lokalen zijn opgeleverd, terwijl studenten steeds vaker in groepen voor opdrachtgevers werken. “Een meer ‘open space’ zou fijn zijn geweest. Het zou me niet verwonderen als we daar nog wat in gaan aanpassen.”
Fijne lichtinval, weinig karakter
Andrea van Zuuk, onderwijscoördinator bij het Instituut voor Communicatie, is eveneens te spreken over Heidelberglaan 15. “Het is een mooi en groot gebouw, waardoor ik de gewenste stappen snel maak op mijn stappenteller. De lichtinval en het uitzicht naar de weilanden vind ik fijn. De ‘Harry Potter trappen’ geven het gebouw ook iets magisch.” De gemeenschappelijke ruimte en medewerkersruimte ogen volgens Van Zuuk nog wel wat kil. “Er is nog weinig karakter aanwezig. Wat meer kleur, wat kleine attributen of een zithoekje zouden hierbij kunnen helpen.” Collega Monique Binkhuysen is het daarmee eens: “Er mag meer aandacht worden besteed aan de sfeer en inrichting van de medewerkersruimte. Er staat gebruikt meubilair in en daar is het bij gebleven. De indeling vind ik ook onpraktisch.” Zowel Van Zuuk als Binkhuysen geven bovendien aan dat het nog steeds erg koud is in hun medewerkersruimte.
Hun collega Jonas Moons, docent-onderzoeker bij het Instituut voor Communicatie, vindt ook dat het gebouw redelijk kil overkomt door het industriële karakter en de kale vloeren. Desondanks begint hij wel steeds meer te wennen in het nieuwe gebouw. “Ik voel me hier steeds meer thuis. Het gebouw heeft een frisse, moderne, industriële uitstraling. Ik vind het ook architectonisch interessant door de (rol)trappen in het midden van het gebouw en de doorkijkjes die die geven. Het voelt licht en open. De afdeling met het Instituut voor Communicatie heeft een prettige, informele sfeer.”
HideOut mooie ontmoetingsplek
Wat het bestuur van studievereniging Forum betreft is HL15 zeker een vooruitgang in vergelijking met de tijdelijke huisvesting op de Daltonlaan. “Het ziet er mooi uit, de roltrappen zijn fijn en ook het food court valt in de smaak. Fijn aan Heidelberglaan 15 vinden we absoluut science café HideOut, omdat dit echt een mooie plek is om samen te komen.” Niels van Harten, student Commerciële Economie, is het hiermee eens. “Het nieuwe café HideOut is een grote aanwinst! Het is een gezellige plek om ’s ochtends een kopje koffie te drinken en vanaf 16.00 uur een koud biertje.”
Van Harten vervolgt: “Het gebouw is een hele verbetering ten opzichte van Daltonlaan 500, er is erg veel licht en ruimte. Het voelt nu meer als een echte school aan in plaats van een kantoorgebouw zoals op de Daltonlaan. De lokalen staan goed en duidelijk aangegeven, de indeling is makkelijk. Ook de dakterrassen zijn erg fijn, heerlijk om daar tussen de lessen door een frisse neus te halen.” Het is volgens hem wel soms even zoeken naar medestudenten. “Dit komt omdat je door het hele gebouw les hebt en het gebouw zo groot is. Op de Daltonlaan zaten we met vier instituten en kwam ik vaak veel medestudenten tegen.” Volgens de student kunnen de instituutspleinen op HL15 wat leuker worden aangekleed. “Misschien is het leuk om ergens een tafelvoetbaltafel neer te zetten of iets dergelijks.”
Gebrek aan studieplekken en projectruimtes
Het bestuur van Forum ziet de capaciteit qua studieplekken en projectruimtes als een groot verbeterpunt. “Die vinden wij erg laag. Onze leden ervaren bijvoorbeeld moeilijkheden met het vinden van een plek om te studeren, omdat het vaak druk is in het gebouw. Ook is het voor commissies vaak niet mogelijk om een ruimte te vinden om te vergaderen.”
Staff members and students appreciative and critical of HL15
It has been almost three months since we first started using the new building on Heidelberglaan 15. Time to ask some staff members and students for an interim assessment. How do they like the new location so far? Which aspects do they appreciate in particular, and which points for improvement do they want to share?
IT lecturer Gert van Hardeveld tells us he’s quite proud of the new building and enjoys inviting visitors to the new location. “As soon as you enter the building, you get this nice vibe. A host or hostess is standing by the door to welcome you. And the nearby coffee corner, eateries and seating areas further add to this friendly atmosphere. I like the dynamism you feel when you’re inside. You see people moving about, using the escalators, working in smaller and larger groups. The building’s layout offers a wide range of environments, so that everyone can find a place to work here.”
Van Hardeveld has also noticed that it has become easier to work together with, for example, Communication and Multimedia Design – now that the two departments are in the same building. “And if our students need to pitch something, I can use the gallery in the TV studio. In other words, the building offers the right space for every situation. And yes, that bar [the HideOut science café, eds.] is also a great option for letting off steam with your students and colleagues every now and then.” The only point of criticism he has to offer so far is that there are too many standard-sized rooms, even though students are increasingly required to work on client projects in groups. “If would have been great if we had more ‘open space’. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some changes in this area at some point.”
Nice daylight, lack of ambiance
Andrea van Zuuk, programme coordinator for the Institute for Communication, is also enthusiastic about the new location. “It’s a large and attractive building, which means it doesn’t take me long to reach the desired number of steps on my pedometer. I love how the daylight enters the building and the views of the surrounding countryside. And the ‘Harry Potter stairs’ lend the hall a certain magic.” According to Van Zuuk, the ambiance in the communal area and the staff member rooms leaves something to be desired. “These areas don’t have a lot of character yet. They could use a bit more colour, a few styling touches or a sitting area of some kind.” Her colleague Monique Binkhuysen agrees: “They could pay a bit more attention to the mood and furnishings in the staff member room. They set up some used furniture and left at that. And I don’t find the layout particularly practical either.” Furthermore, both Van Zuuk and Binkhuysen indicate that their staff member room is still very cold.
Their colleague Jonas Moons, who works as lecturer-researcher at the Institute for Communication, agrees that the building is hardly cosy due to its industrial appearance and bare floors. Nevertheless, he is slowly getting used to his new environs. “I’m starting to feel more and more at home here. The building has a fresh, modern, industrial feel. And I also think it’s interesting in terms of architecture, with the escalators and staircases in the middle of the building and the sightlines they create. It feels airy and open. And the wing where the Institute for Communication is set up has a friendly, informal atmosphere.”
HideOut: great place to meet up
As far as the board members of the Forum study association are concerned, Heidelberglaan 15 is definitely an improvement over HU’s temporary location on Daltonlaan. “The building looks great, the escalators are nice and the food court has gone down well. One feature that we particularly like is the HideOut science café. It’s a great place to meet up.” Marketing student Niels van Harten agrees. “I’m really happy with the new HideOut café! It has a friendly atmosphere, and it’s great for grabbing a coffee in the morning or, from 4 p.m. on, a cold beer.”
Van Harten continues: “The building is a massive improvement over Daltonlaan 500, and it offers a lot of light and space. It feels more like an actual school than an office building – the way our previous location did. The classrooms are clearly marked and signposted and it’s easy to find your way around. And the roof terraces are really nice too. It’s a great place to get some fresh air in between classes.” Although occasionally, it takes some time before you spot a fellow student. “That’s because classes are spread throughout the entire building, and the building’s quite large. At Daltonlaan, we had four institutes sharing the building – meaning I bumped into classmates more often.” According to the student, the institute areas at HL15 could use a bit more deco. “Maybe they could set up a table football somewhere or something like that.”
Lack of study areas and project rooms
Another major point for improvement in the view of the Forum board is capacity in terms of study areas and project rooms. “We think it’s too low. Our members have difficulty finding a good place to study, for example, because the building is often quite busy. And committees are frequently unable to find a room where they can hold a meeting.”
