Heidelberglaan 15 is de nieuwste onderwijslocatie van Hogeschool Utrecht. In dit gloednieuwe gebouw, dat het sluitstuk vormt van het HU Huisvestingsprogramma, vind je de opleidingen van Media & Communicatie, Economie & Management en ICT, en de lectoraten van het Kenniscentrum Economisch Sterke en Creatieve Stad.
Op de tweede verdieping van HL15 bevindt zich de Media Technologische Omgeving (MTO) van het Instituut voor Media (IvM). Hier vind je onder andere de moderne radio- en televisiestudio’s met de nieuwste state-of-the-art apparatuur. Martijn de Groot, projectmanager MTO en coördinator Media van de School voor Journalistiek is trots op het resultaat: “We hebben hier nu camera’s met dezelfde kwaliteit, die ook bij het NOS Journaal worden gebruikt. Veel lokale omroepen zullen jaloers zijn op onze apparatuur. We lopen nu synchroon of zelfs voor op de beroepspraktijk. Je kunt het vergelijken met de nieuwste iPhone met de meest innovatieve functies.”
Maximale mogelijkheden
Het doel van de Media Technologische Omgeving is om het onderwijs zo goed mogelijk te ondersteunen en maximale mogelijkheden te bieden voor het curriculum, zowel voor studenten Journalistiek als Communication & Multimedia Design (CMD). De Groot: “Het verschil met de MTO op de Bolognalaan is dat we nu multifunctioneler zijn geworden en meer service kunnen bieden.” Zo zorgt de multifunctionele inzetbaarheid van apparatuur en ruimtes voor een stuk flexibiliteit. “In bijna iedere MTO-ruimte kan er nu bijvoorbeeld zowel video- als 
audiomontage worden gedaan, eerder waren dat afzonderlijke ruimten. We verdubbelen daardoor bijna in capaciteit en dat is in lijn met inzet op maximale praktijkervaring voor studenten in het curriculum.”
Op servicegebied is de vooruitgang binnenkort merkbaar als studenten thuis aan videomontages werken en deze gelijk kunnen doorsturen naar school, zodat het item bij wijze van spreken een paar seconden later al in de tv-uitzending kan komen. “Verder is de MTO-omgeving nu veel meer een plek waarin je samen aan producties kunt werken in plaats van stand alone.”
Elke donderdag een BN’er op bezoek
Op Heidelberglaan 15 worden de tv-uitzendingen gemaakt vanuit de gloednieuwe studio, een echte eyecatcher die tevens voorzien is van een tribune. “We hebben de mogelijkheid om hier grote uitzendingen te maken waarbij het publiek in dezelfde ruimte zit. De glaswand kan namelijk open”, aldus De Groot. Hier maken studenten Journalistiek straks elke week meerdere tv-uitzendingen, waaronder voor RTV Utrecht. Ook komt er iedere donderdag een toonaangevende journalist of mediapersoonlijkheid langs in het ‘Bonusprogramma’, georganiseerd door studievereniging LeF. Zo zijn Twan Huys, Hanneke Groenteman, Peter van der Vorst, Jessica Villerius en vele anderen de afgelopen jaren al eens stevig aan de tand gevoeld door SvJ-studenten.
Live radio maken door het hele gebouw
Dankzij de goede samenwerking van IM&ICT met de audio-engineers die de radiostudio’s hebben gebouwd is het daarnaast mogelijk om op verschillende plekken binnen Heidelberglaan 15 live radio te maken. “Daarvoor is alleen een apparaatje nodig dat je op een andere verdieping aansluit op het netwerk. Vervolgens kunnen studenten live uitzenden en is die uitzending ook nog eens overal ter wereld te beluisteren, mits je het juiste webadres weet. Die mogelijkheid hadden we eerst nog niet”, vertelt De Groot.
In de nieuwe radiostudio kunnen studenten tevens zelf de techniek voor hun rekening nemen. “Dit heet officieel self-op en geeft studenten de mogelijkheid om te leren hoe de techniek en het geluid bij een radio-uitzending werken. Daarnaast hebben we ook nog een traditionele studio waar de techniek wordt overgelaten aan een technicus.”
Online een instructeur boeken
Een andere vernieuwing is het online boekingssysteem voor studenten om een afspraak te maken met radio- en tv-instructeurs. De Groot: “Studenten moesten altijd aan instructeurs vragen of ze tijd hadden voor begeleiding bij het monteren van radio- of tv-items of om te helpen bij andere technische/inhoudelijke vragen. Nu zullen er geen rijen meer ontstaan, omdat de student een afspraak maakt met een instructeur op een vast tijdstip. De instructeurs kunnen vervolgens de resterende tijd besteden aan bijvoorbeeld het geven van trainingen.”
Overige ruimtes in de MTO
Naast de radio- en tv-studio bestaat de Media Technologische Omgeving uit verschillende ruimtes voor regie, montage en redactie. Eveneens is er een fotostudio met greenscreen, twee newsrooms (voor radio en tv) en een mediadesk voor de uitleen van speciale apparatuur zoals camera’s. Ten slotte vind je ook de multimedia werkplaats en makerspace van de opleiding Communication & Multimedia Design in de Media Technologische Omgeving.
Welcome to the Media Technology Environment
Heidelberglaan 15 is the newest location of HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. In this brand new building, which is the final part of the relocation programme of HU, you will find the degree programmes in the fields of study of Economics & Management, Communication, Media and ICT, and the research centre.
The Media Technological Environment (MTO) of the Media Institute (IvM) is located on the second floor of the new building at Heidelberglaan 15. Here you will find modern radio and television studios with the latest state-of-the-art equipment. Martijn de Groot, Project Manager MTO and Coordinator Media at the School for Journalism is proud of the result: “We now have the same cameras as those used at the Dutch news broadcaster, NOS Journaal. Many local broadcasters will be quite jealous of our equipment. We’re now running head to head, if not actually ahead of the professional practice. You can compare it to the latest iPhone with all the most innovative features.”
Maximum opportunity
The aim of the Media Technological Environment is to support the education as effectively as possible and to offer maximum opportunity for the curricula of the Journalism, as well as the Communication & Multimedia Design (CMD) students. De Groot: “The difference between this and the MTO at Bolognalaan is that we have become more hybrid and can offer a wider range of services. For example, the students can now do video editing at home and transfer the products directly to school via a VPN connection, so that the item can be broadcast a few seconds later, so to speak.”
A celebrity visit every Thursday
The TV shows at Heidelberglaan 15 are broadcast from the brand new studio; a real eye catcher with its own live audience seating. “We now have the opportunity to create big broadcasts with the audience in the same space, since the glass wall can be opened,” says De Groot. Journalism students will produce several TV broadcasts here every week. Every Thursday, a prominent journalist or media personality will visit the ‘Bonus Show’, organised by the LeF study association. For example, Twan Huys, Hanneke Groenteman, Peter van der Vorst, Jessica Villerius and many others have already been thoroughly challenged by SvJ students in recent years.
Making live radio throughout the building
The new technologies available in the MTO also make it possible to produce live radio at various locations in Heidelberglaan 15. “All that’s required is a device that you connect to the network on another floor. The result is that our students can now broadcast live and listen to that broadcast anywhere in the world, as long as you know the correct web address. We didn’t have that option in the past,” says De Groot.
The students can also operate the technology in the new radio studio themselves. “The official name for this is ‘self-op’ and it offers the students the opportunity to learn how the technology and sound in a radio broadcast work. We also have a traditional studio, where the technology is left to the technician.”
Book an instructor online
Another innovation is the online booking system that our students can use to make appointments with radio and TV instructors. De Groot: “In the past, the students had to ask their instructors for supervision time when assembling radio or TV items or for help with other technical/substantive issues. This means there will be no more queues, because our students will be able to make an appointment with an instructor at a fixed time. The instructors can then spend the remaining time on, for example, providing training.”
Other spaces in the MTO
Besides the radio and TV studio, the Media Technological Environment also has various rooms for directing, video editing and editorial work. It also has a photo studio with a green screen, a newsroom and a media desk that lends out special equipment, such as cameras. Finally, you will also find the Multimedia Workshop and Maker Space of the Communication & Multimedia Design degree programme in the Media Technological Environment.
