Op 10 oktober, de dag van de duurzaamheid, vierde Hogeschool Utrecht dat al haar Utrechtse onderwijs en onderzoek is samengebracht op het Utrecht Science Park. Door alle Utrechtse activiteiten samen te brengen op één locatie, wordt samenwerken gestimuleerd.
De afgelopen vijf jaar is het Utrechtse onderwijs en onderzoek van Hogeschool Utrecht (HU) geherhuisvest: gebouwen in de Utrechtse binnenstad zijn afgestoten, de panden op Utrecht Science Park (USP) zijn gerenoveerd en er is een nieuw gebouw neergezet. De gerenoveerde gebouwen en de nieuwbouw zijn zo ontworpen dat ze samenwerking stimuleren: Samenwerking tussen de opleidingen, maar ook met partners uit andere kennisinstellingen en de beroepspraktijk. Zo zijn er diverse labs en werkplaatsen waarin met externe partners aan projecten kan worden gewerkt. Collegevoorzitter Jan Bogerd: “De samenleving staat voor uitdagingen op het gebied van gezondheid, technologie, veiligheid, bereikbaarheid, duurzaamheid. Deze uitdagingen zijn niet op te lossen vanuit één belang, één technologie en één vakgebied. Ze vragen om samenwerking.”
Ontmoeting
De HU-gebouwen hebben verschillende cateringconcepten, waardoor medewerkers en studenten verleid worden om ook eens een ander gebouw binnen te lopen. Ook de buitenruimtes op de campus zijn ontworpen vanuit het idee dat ze voor ontmoeting en verbinding moeten zorgen. Studenten en medewerkers werden nauw betrokken bij het ontwerpproces en de realisatie en inrichting van het pand. Samenwerking is de basis voor de inrichting, vanwege de ambities die Hogeschool Utrecht met onderwijs en onderzoek heeft.
Duurzaamheid
Milieuvriendelijkheid was een belangrijk criterium bij de renovatie en de nieuwbouw. In het nieuwe gebouw op Heidelberglaan 15, waarin de opleidingen van het domein economie & management, de instituten voor communicatie en media en het instituut voor ICT te vinden zijn, haalt zelfs een ‘excellent’ niveau op de schaal van BREEAM, een internationaal meetinstrument voor de duurzaamheid van gebouwen, gebieden en sloopprojecten. Dit hoge niveau wordt onder andere bereikt door energiezuinige liften en roltrappen, door zoveel mogelijk daglicht te genereren op studie- en werkplekken, door zonnepanelen en groene daktuinen.
Milieuvriendelijke gebouwen zijn van belang omdat de HU met studenten, medewerkers en partners samenwerkt aan een duurzame toekomst in economische, ecologische en sociale zin. De HU gaat daarbij uit van de 17 duurzame ontwikkelingsdoelen van de VN, die zich richten op thema’s als bestrijding van armoede, honger en klimaatverandering; stimuleren van vrede, gezondheid en welzijn, goed onderwijs, gelijke rechten, mensenrechten, schoon water, schone energie, werkgelegenheid, circulaire economie, duurzame stad, maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen en ecologische duurzaamheid (gezonde natuur onder en boven water).
Symposium en open podium route
Het samenbrengen van HU-activiteiten werd gevierd met een symposium en een open podium route, waarbij bezoekers konden kennismaken met maar liefst 39 projecten over onder andere armoedebestrijding, inclusie en vitaliteit, en met innovatieplekken als de HU-Techlabs en het internationaal bekroonde Selficient-huis, dat in de ochtend officieel werd geopend door Marjan Minnesma, directeur van klimaatbureau Urgenda.
De dag werd afgesloten met het symposium ‘Impact op de Stad van Morgen’. Ed Nijpels praatte ons bij over het Klimaatakkoord en Arie Koornneef van ASN Bank vertelde over de klimaatreis naar Spitsbergen. Marjan Minnesma benadrukte dat directe actie noodzakelijk is, om de wereld voor onze kinderen nog leefbaar achter te kunnen laten. Cyrille Krul nam ons mee in de duurzaamheidsambities van de HU en collegevoorzitter Jan Bogerd benadrukte dat duurzaamheid bij de HU breed is en vooral ook sociale duurzaamheid betekent. Anton Pijpers, collegevoorzitter van de Universiteit Utrecht, maakte ons deelgenoot van de gezamenlijke ambities van het USP, die er veelbelovend uitzien. Het symposium werd afgesloten door Tineke Zweed met het aanbieden van een cadeau aan het USP: een drijvend terras dat uitnodigt tot nog meer verbinding en ontmoetingen op het USP.

HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht combines education and research at the Utrecht Science Park
On 10 October, the day of sustainability, HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht celebrated the fact that all of its Utrecht education and research has been united in the Utrecht Science Park. Uniting all Utrecht activities in a single location promotes collaboration.
During the past five years, Utrecht education and research by HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht (HU) have been re-accommodated: buildings in the Utrecht city centre were sold, the premises in Utrecht Science Park (USP) were renovated and a new building was erected. The renovated buildings and the new building were designed to promote collaboration: collaboration between the degree programmes, but also with partners from other knowledge institutions and professional practice. For example, the set-up includes various labs and workplaces in which projects can be worked on with external partners. Jan Bogerd, executive board chairman: “Society faces challenges in the areas of health, technology, safety, accessibility and sustainability. These challenges cannot be solved through one interest, one technology and one discipline. They require collaboration.”
Meeting
The HU buildings have different catering concepts, thereby tempting staff members and students to enter other buildings. The outdoor spaces at the campus too are designed on the basis of the idea that they have to establish meetings and connections. Students and staff members were closely involved in the design process and the further realisation and layout of the premises. Collaboration is the basis for the design, because of the ambitions pursued by HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht in terms of education and research.
Sustainability
Environmental friendliness was an important criterion for the renovation and new construction. The new building at Heidelberglaan 15, which accommodates the programmes in the Economics & Management domain, the Institutes for Media and Communication and the Institute for ICT, even achieves an ‘excellent’ score on the scale of BREEAM, an international measuring tool for the sustainability of buildings, areas and demolition projects. This high score is achieved by, among other things, energy-efficient lifts and escalators, generating as much daylight in study and work areas as possible, solar panels and green roof gardens. Environmentally-friendly buildings are important because the HU collaborates with students, staff members and partners on a sustainable future, economically, ecologically and socially. The HU bases its efforts on the 17 sustainable development goals of the UN, which focus on themes such as combating poverty, hunger and climate change; and promoting peace, health and well-being, quality education, equal rights, human rights, clean water, clean energy, employment, circular economy, sustainable city, corporate social responsibility and ecological sustainability (healthy nature, both above and below the water surface).
Symposium and open podium route
To mark the occasion of HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht bringing education and research together at one location, a symposium and ‘open podium’ (open stage) route were organised, introducing visitors to as many as 39 projects dealing with subjects such as poverty reduction, inclusion, and vitality, as well as to innovation centres such as the HU Tech Labs and the international prize-winning Selficient house, which was officially opened that morning by Marjan Minnesma, the director of the Urgenda climate office.
The day was concluded with a symposium entitled ‘Impact on the City of Tomorrow.’ Ed Nijpels updated us on the Climate Agreement and Arie Koornneef of ASN Bank told us all about the climate trip to Svalbard. Marjan Minnesma stressed that immediate action is needed to leave our children a liveable world. Cyrille Krul introduced us to the HU’s sustainability ambitions, and Executive Board President Jan Bogerd explained that sustainability is a broad concept at the HU that also includes social sustainability. Anton Pijpers, the President of the Executive Board of Utrecht University, briefed us on the joint ambitions for USP, which are highly promising. At the end of the symposium, Tineke Zweed had a gift for Utrecht Science Park, a floating outdoor seating area that will tempt people even more to connect and meet up at USP.
