Hoe gaat de HU om met het Coronavirus?

Vanaf het begin van dit jaar worden de ontwikkelingen rondom de uitbraak van het Coronavirus nauwlettend gevolgd door de HU. Uiteraard ging de eerste aandacht uit naar eventuele studenten van de HU die in de stad Wuhan verblijven, of recent verbleven. Daarbij is gebleken dat er een student in Wuhan is en een paar studenten recent waren teruggekeerd. Het International Office vormt samen met de security manager, de betrokken opleidingen en specialisten van de HU een kleine taskforce.
De student die in Wuhan aanwezig is heeft contact met de Nederlandse ambassade en maakt deel uit van de evacuatie door de samenwerkende Europese landen. We verwachten dat hij snel terugkeert. Er is contact met deze student, hij maakt het goed onder de omstandigheden. De studenten die recent zijn teruggekeerd maken het ook goed, er is geen sprake van besmetting met het virus. Voor de zekerheid houden de studenten zich aan de voorgeschreven adviezen van het RIVM en met name de incubatietijd van twee weken.
Naast de aandacht voor de repatriëring van de student en de opvang van de teruggekeerde studenten heeft deze taskforce alle directeuren geïnformeerd via de website van het RIVM waar een uitgebreide FAQ beschikbaar is. Ook zijn de directeuren verwezen naar de reisadviezen van het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties voor het beoordelen van mogelijke aanvragen of plannen van studenten om naar China c.q. Wuhan af te reizen. Inmiddels is voor heel China een code Oranje afgegeven (alleen noodzakelijke reizen) en voor de provincie Hubei (waar Wuhan ligt) geldt code Rood.
De HU heeft ook contact met collega-onderwijsinstellingen, het veiligheidsnetwerk USP, de gemeente en de Nederlandse ambassade in China. We blijven de ontwikkelingen volgen en adviseren de opleidingen waar studenten plannen hebben of maken om in China te studeren later dit jaar, goed te overleggen over de mogelijkheden daartoe. Daarbij kan het International Office van de HU adviseren.
How is the HU handling developments resulting from the coronavirus?
As of the beginning of this year the HU is following all developments considering the outbreak of the Coronavirus meticulously. Obviously our primary concern was for possible HU-students who are or were staying in the city of Wuhan. One student appeared to be in Wuhan and several others have recently returned. The HU International Office forms a small taskforce together with the security manager, the programs involved and HU specialists.
The student who is currently in Wuhan is in contact with the Dutch embassy and is part of the evacuation program coordinated by a number of cooperating European countries. We expect him to return shortly. We are in contact with this student and he is doing fine considering the circumstances. The students who have recently returned are also doing fine and there has not been any contamination by the virus. Just to be on the safe side, the students are following the advice of the RIVM considering the two-week incubation period.
Next to trying to get the student home safely and caring for the students who have recently returned, this taskforce has informed all directors via the RIVM-website. The directors have been pointed at the travel advice of the Ministry of Domestic Affairs when they need to judge possible applications or plans of students to travel to China or Wuhan in particular. Currently code orange (necessary travel only) applies for the entire country of China and code red for the province of Hubei (in which Wuhan is situated).
The HU has also been in contact with other educational organizations, the safety network USP, the municipality of Utrecht and the Dutch Embassy in China. We continue to monitor the developments and advice all programs to discuss the possibilities properly should there be students who have plans to study in China later this year.
